Questions
Should a plumber use flat-rate or hourly invoicing?
Most residential plumbers use flat-rate pricing per task because customers want the price before the work starts. Hourly is normal for commercial and for troubleshooting. Either way, state which one the invoice uses.
How do I bill an emergency call?
A separate service-call line at the after-hours rate, then the repair at your normal flat rate. Customers accept a visible emergency fee more readily than an inflated repair price.
Do I include the permit fee on the invoice?
Yes, as a pass-through line at cost, with the permit number in the description. Attach the receipt from the city.
What warranty is standard on plumbing work?
One year on workmanship is common; parts carry the manufacturer warranty. Shorter for drain cleaning (30–90 days) because recurrence is not your fault.
Can I invoice from my phone on the job?
That is the point of a one-page invoice. A PDF form works; an invoice app with your saved flat-rate tasks is faster and keeps a client list for the next call.
